PEAP Overview

The Defence Partner Employment Assistance Program (PEAP) supports partners of serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members with financial assistance for employment help. The program will fund employment services for eligible partners in recognition of the challenges that these people face when ADF members are relocated or impacted through ADF deployments.

The core goal of the program is to support ADF partners in securing meaningful employment or career advancement, by funding access to employment services. The program offers funding to help develop new skills, apply for jobs, and engage in career planning and career transition support.

Eligibility Criteria

Those who are eligible for the program include –

  • Partners of full-time ADF members (formally recognised as a partner by the Defence Department).
  • They cannot be full-time serving ADF members themselves.
  • They should have relocated geographically because of a member’s posting to a new location within Australia.

Relocations can be tough on partners, and the other members of the family. The problem can be tougher when the relocation due to the deployment requirements of the serving partner requires that you have to give up your job, one which you may enjoy.

Services Provided

There are numerous services that are eligible for funding by the program. These services include the following –

Resume and Cover Letter Assistance

The resume and cover letter are the first things that prospective new employers are going to see. When you’re a partner of an ADF member, you might have a range of career breaks, or short-term employment periods which can look negative to some employers. You may also have career transitions that don’t look natural.

If this problem is ignored a poor first impression is created with employers and recruiters and risks can be raised in the hiring manager’s mind. This leads to rejection, especially in a tough job market. Getting help to explain these transitions and gaps in your resume is critical. Working with a professional CV and letter writer can help people to explain any gaps and transitions and detail why they’re a perfect candidate for any potential work in a powerful and impactful way.

Career Counselling and Navigation

As a partner of an ADF member, you’ve sacrificed a lot to support them. The program can provide career counselling to help you get your career back on track by working with a coach to explore meaningful work opportunities and strategies to help you navigate changes. Identify career options and set goals that are achievable and practical.

Job Search Support and Networking

Staying positive and keeping a positive frame of mind during job seeking is a huge challenge. Personalised, one-on-one support is available through the program to provide you with job search strategies and practical help to secure your new role faster and with less stress.

Job search strategies are simple, actionable plans that can help people connect with employers and recruiters for real work opportunities. There are proven techniques that everyone can learn to boost your chances of applying on the open job market (job boards), as well as tapping into the hidden job market, by connecting and being referred to people that are hiring.

Interview Preparation and Coaching

Everyone can learn how to interview well and coaching is a great way to build confidence and skills, no matter what level you are starting at.  By going through mock interviews and learning about proven techniques to answer questions, you can prepare well for your next interview and also use these skills in phone calls and networking conversations that are critical to finding your next job. It’s very common for people to say they dislike talking about themselves in interviews and find it hard to ‘sell themselves’. There are very straightforward ways to build these skills and make these conversations less uncomfortable.

Training and Upskilling Opportunities

To move forward in your career, or secure new career opportunities at a new location, you might need some training or to upskill. Using the program, you can gain these new skills and make yourself more desirable to potential employers.

At PS Careers we provide training in all aspects of job searching and career development, right from choosing a job type and finding employers, through to CV writing, cover letters, interviews and even negotiations on your job offer.

You can gain new skills through further education, go on training courses, or complete certifications in a wide range of disciplines.

Funding and Financial Support

For those who need to get new certifications or re-register for disciplines that they might have had before a previous deployment, funding, and financial support can be made available through the PEAP program.

Contacting the PEAP program support team online can help you identify reasonable expenses that are accepted in the program.

Application Process

The application is simple and is done in three stages –

  1. Review the guidelines for the program to ensure your eligibility and whether the costs you’re looking to cover can be claimed.
